اثنا عشر سؤالًا لا تكفّ البشرية عن طرحها. واثنا عشر تقليدًا تقدّم حكمتها. حيث تلتقي، قِف عليها؛ وحيث تفترق، احمِل التوتّر ولا تُذوّبه.
تتفق التقاليد الاثنا عشر على أن في الحال الإنسانية خللًا، وعلى أن ثمة علاجًا. لكنها لا تتفق على ما هو الخلل، ولا على ما هو العلاج.

حيث تتقارب التقاليد، نسمّي الأرض المشتركة. وحيث تختلف اختلافًا لا يُرأب، نحفظ التوتّر — ولا نتظاهر بأن الخلاف غير موجود.
لا تخبرك هذه البوصلة أيُّ تقليد هو الصواب. إنما تريك أين تتقارب حكمة البشرية — وبالقدر نفسه من الأهمية، أين لا تتقارب.
