General Epistles

Group 10 — The General Epistles (Hebrews, James, 1–2 Peter, 1–2–3 John, Jude)

N=1 book-group distillation. Source: WEB, Gutenberg #8294. Quotes pending Phase 7 audit. Tags: ../00-methodology.md. Per-letter depth is Stage-B.

Group role

The general (catholic) epistles supply the canon's definition of faith (Hebrews), its sharpest insistence that faith must show in works and that "pure religion" is care for the vulnerable (James), and its most direct identification of God's very being with love — "God is love" (1 John), which makes love of the visible neighbour the test of love for the unseen God.

Atomic statements

G10-C1: Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the proof of things not seen. (FOUNDATIONAL / REDEMPTION+WISDOM)

  • Hebrews 11:1: "Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen."
  • Stance: assert · Importance: core

G10-C2: Faith without works is dead; genuine faith acts. (OPERATIONAL / REDEMPTION+JUSTICE)

  • James 2:17: "Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself."
  • Stance: assert · Importance: core

G10-C3: Pure religion is to care for the orphan and widow and to keep oneself unstained. (FOUNDATIONAL / JUSTICE+LOVE)

  • James 1:27: "Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained by the world."
  • Stance: assert · Importance: core

G10-C4: God is love; love is the test of knowing God; love covers a multitude of sins. (FOUNDATIONAL / GOD+LOVE)

  • 1 John 4:8: "He who doesn't love doesn't know God, for God is love."
  • 1 John 4:16: "God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him."
  • 1 Peter 4:8: "…be earnest in your love among yourselves, for love covers a multitude of sins."
  • Stance: assert · Importance: core · Untranslatable: agapē

G10-C5: Love of God is inseparable from love of the visible neighbour; to claim love of God while hating one's brother is to be a liar. (OPERATIONAL / LOVE)

  • 1 John 4:19–20: "We love Him, because he first loved us. If a man says, 'I love God,' and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who doesn't love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?"
  • Stance: assert · Importance: core

Step 4 — Clusters

Cluster Atomic statements Intent
Faith and its proof G10-C1, C2, C3 Faith is trust in the unseen — and is proved real by works and care for the vulnerable
God is love G10-C4, C5 God's very being is love; love of the seen neighbour tests love of the unseen God

Step 5 — Internal tensions

James's "faith without works is dead" (G10-C2) is the classic foil to Paul's "saved by grace, not works" (Group 9). The canon's resolution: works are faith's evidence, not its ground. Held in tension, noted.

Step 6 — Synthesized group principles

G10-P1: Faith is trust in the unseen, proved by works

"Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the proof of things not seen"; yet "faith without works is dead." Genuine faith is trust that acts.

  • Tier: FOUNDATIONAL · Domain: REDEMPTION+WISDOM · Covers: G10-C1, C2 · Evidence: Heb 11:1, Jas 2:17

G10-P2: True religion is care for the vulnerable

"Pure religion… is to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction" — religion is authenticated by mercy toward the most exposed, not by profession.

  • Tier: FOUNDATIONAL · Domain: JUSTICE+LOVE · Covers: G10-C3 · Evidence: Jas 1:27

G10-P3: God is love

"God is love"; whoever does not love does not know God; love "covers a multitude of sins." Love is not merely commanded by God — it is God's very being.

  • Tier: FOUNDATIONAL · Domain: GOD+LOVE · Covers: G10-C4 · Evidence: 1 John 4:8, 4:16, 1 Pet 4:8 · Untranslatable: agapē

G10-P4: Love of God is inseparable from love of the neighbour

One cannot love the unseen God while hating the seen brother; love of neighbour is the necessary test and expression of love of God.

  • Tier: OPERATIONAL · Domain: LOVE · Covers: G10-C5 · Evidence: 1 John 4:19–20

Step 7 — Traceability

Principle Atomic statements Verses
G10-P1 C1, C2 Heb 11:1, Jas 2:17
G10-P2 C3 Jas 1:27
G10-P3 C4 1 John 4:8, 4:16, 1 Pet 4:8
G10-P4 C5 1 John 4:19–20

Step 8 — Quality

  • Coverage: the faith/works and "God is love" cores are captured; Hebrews' priesthood typology, the persecution/eschatology material of 1–2 Peter and Jude, and the short letters 2–3 John are orphaned at this granularity (Stage-B).
  • Principles: 4.
  • Traceability: 100%.

Step 9 — Validation

  • Frame-independent: G10-P1 (faith proved by works), G10-P2 (care for the vulnerable as the test of religion), and G10-P4 (love of God inseparable from love of neighbour) read as intelligible ethical/religious claims and converge with the prophetic justice strand and with many traditions' "deeds over profession" (cf. Buddhist P11).
  • Claim-vs-warrant flag: "God IS love" (G10-P3) is a WEAK-distinctive metaphysical claim — not merely "love is good" but that ultimate reality is itself love; this grounds the Christian warrant for love in the divine nature and is a key Atlas input (love's foundation differs from traditions where love is a discipline or a command rather than the nature of ultimate reality).
