Gleanings <roman>.⚠️ This is the tradition's load-bearing pluralist distinctive and a META-CLAIM most other traditions reject. See the Atlas note.
Theme role
The most distinctive Bahá'í doctrine: divine revelation is one continuous, progressive process. The founders of the great religions — the Manifestations of God — are successive returns of one reality, each bringing a teaching suited to the requirements of its age. Religion is therefore essentially one and unfolding, not a set of rival faiths.

Step 4 — Clusters
| Cluster | Atomic statements | Intent |
|---|---|---|
| Oneness of the Manifestations | C1, C2 | The Prophets are one reality returning |
| Progressivity | C3 | Each revelation fits its age |
| Purpose: heal a divided humanity | C4, C5 | Religion exists for unity and peace, never animosity |
Step 5 — Internal tensions
None internal. The external tension is the whole point: this doctrine claims to unify the very traditions that would reject being so unified (see Step 9).
Step 6 — Synthesized principles
Rev-P1: Revelation is one, continuous, and progressive
The Manifestations of God succeed each other across the ages, each "clothed in divers attire" yet abiding "in the same tabernacle"; each brings a teaching suited to its age. Religion is therefore essentially one and unfolding.
- Tier:
FOUNDATIONAL· Domain: REVELATION · Covers: C1, C2, C3 · Evidence: Gleanings XXII, XXXI, XXXIV - Untranslatable: Manifestation of God (Maẓhar-i-Iláhí); progressive revelation
Rev-P2: Religion exists to unite, not to divide — its differences must not breed animosity
The Prophets are physicians sent to heal "a divided humanity"; the diversity of religious systems must never be allowed to foster animosity. The purpose of revelation is the unity and peace of humankind.
- Tier:
FOUNDATIONAL· Domain: REVELATION+UNITY · Covers: C4, C5 · Evidence: Gleanings XXXIV, CVI, CXXXII
Step 7 — Traceability
| Principle | Atomic statements | Citations |
|---|---|---|
| Rev-P1 | C1, C2, C3 | Gleanings XXII, XXXI, XXXIV |
| Rev-P2 | C4, C5 | Gleanings XXXIV, CVI, CXXXII |
Step 8 — Quality
- Coverage: the progressive-revelation / oneness-of-religion theme captured.
- Principles: 2. Traceability: 100%. Copyright: short quotes, attributed, pending Phase 7 audit. ✅
Step 9 — Validation
- Standalone comprehension: the claim "religious differences should not breed animosity / religions share a purpose of healing humanity" (Rev-P2) is broadly intelligible and a strong cross-tradition convergence candidate. But Rev-P1's warrant — that all the great religions are literally chapters of one progressively-revealed faith — is a meta-claim other traditions explicitly reject (e.g., Christianity's finality of Christ, Islam's seal of the prophets, non-theistic Buddhism's lack of a revealing God). CRITICAL ATLAS FLAG: the Atlas must record this as a Bahá'í principle, not adopt it as its own neutral basis for the union compass. The Atlas's own pluralism is owned as a contestable standpoint — it is not Bahá'í progressive revelation, even though the two resemble each other.
